29. August: Apfelfest in Matt's vineyard in Anderson Valley
Jeanne and Matt Henneberg invite you to the Apfelfest in our Vineyard
in Mendocino County on August the 29th. We will gather around noon to eat
and drink,
and afterwards, you pick apples as much as your family might want and
can eat in one month (the Gala does not have along shelf live). We
provide apples, grapes, wine, and beer and you bring a picnic to share.
Afterwards,
fröhliches Beisammensein. There is also a pond to swim in, no
shower and wash facilities, however a portable blue bathroom is available.
We
should be finished by 4:00, in time for you to get home by evening.
The San Francisco Chronicle run last Thursday an article on Anderson
Valley (Anderson Valley Pinot Noir comes of age, Bucolic back country
creates frontline wines). The article is worth your downloading and reading
before you go. It is very beautiful country and worth a trip, if you
have not yet been there. Philo is on Highway 128 leading to Mendocino,
a pleasant town on the coast. When you leave 101 at Cloverdale, you go
on 128 north until you come to Boonville, a 40-minute trip on Landschaflich
schoener Strasse, which would, on German road maps, be dotted with green
lines. From Boonville another 15 minute to our place, see attached road
description. The roundtrip is at least six and a half hours from Palo
Alto, from other locations in the Bay Area correspondingly more or less.
If you shun this long drive in one day, you may want to consider an
overnight stay. There are several State Parks close by (Paul Dimick Park
and others), there are also Bed and Breakfast Inns in Philo, and Mendocino
is a favorite weekend place offering many sites. Whatever option you
choose, you should make your reservations really soon because the tourist
season shifts into overdrive the week before Labor Day.
We know it is a long drive, but it is a beautiful drive, a beautiful
back country that otherwise you would not likely discover. Many visitors
come to Anderson Valley each week end, even though nobody invited them
for an Apfelfest. We hope that many of you will come.
How to get there:
Drive north on 101, exit 101
in Cloverdale to 128 north,
careful not to go 128 south. Continue 36 minutes to Boonville on the
very scenic
highway #128. Continue to Philo, 5 miles, and then pass by several
wineries, the golden mile of pinot noir, about another 7 miles. The
way
marker is Handly Cellars on your right. 100 meters further north appears
a string of mailboxes on your right, signaling the entry to Guntley
Road.
Turn right onto Guntley Road. About 0.7 mile up the road, among other
vineyards is our place, 2400 Guntley Road on the left; a road leads
down to a large
pond where you should park.
